HAVANA, May 24 (Oswaldo de Céspedes, CPI) - The trial against
independent union organizer José Orlando González Bridón,
50, started Thursday in Havana, in a courtroom surrounded by agents of the
Department of State Security who didn't let dissidents approach the building.
Agents and police were evident in the area before 8 a.m., turning away any
dissidents or independent journalists who approached. At least two dissidents
were arrested and later set free in opposite ends of the city. Only relatives of
González were allowed to enter the courtroom.
González is accused of disseminating "enemy propaganda" and
has been in jail since December. He wrote an article published outside Cuba in
which he held the National Police responsible for the death of a woman who was
killed by her ex-husband. The woman had previoulsly solicited protection against
her husband. The prosecutor in the case against González, who had been
asking for a seven year prison sentence, is now asking for one year.
