SANTIAGO DE CUBA, May 23 (Luis Alberto Rivera, APLO) In what appeared
to be an attempt to turn an apparently political matter into a civil one, six
men arrested during disturbances at the funeral of a renowned dissident were
tried and fined in a civil trial, in spite of having been arrested by officers
of the Department of State Security.
The six were released yesterday at noon, after each being assesed 600 pesos
for "public disorder," 400 pesos for "damages," and 167.35
payable to Onelia Sánchez, the administrator of the Santiago funeral home
who figured as the plaintiff in the action brought against the men.
All six men say they were not interrogated by police or State Security
officers.
Two other men involved in the funeral incident are in hiding. Gilberto
Castillo Manzano and Mario Rojas Licea, respectively president and vice
president of the Political Prisoners' Club, are presumably being hunted by State
Security agents; their homes are being watched at all hours.
Dania Fornaris Porto, Castillo's wife, said her husband has a broken arm and
leg, but that he hasn't gone to the hospital for fear of being apprehended.
Castillo was beat by State Security agents when they were breaking up the crowd
accompanying the funeral of dissident Marcelo Amelo Rodríguez.
Other dissidents that had been detained during the confusion at the funeral
were later released far from the area.
