MATANZAS, May 17 (Caridad Díaz Beltrán, Lux Info Press)
A Cuban physician traveling back to Cuba from South Africa, where he had been
working under a Cuban government-sponsored exchange program, asked for asylum
when his plane made a scheduled stop in Madrid.
Pedro Luis Reyes Leyva, an orthopedist who had been in South Africa since
1996, had tried to arrange his stay abroad several times, but had never been
successful due to the close vigilance Cuban medical personnel abroad are subject
to, said one relative.
The chief of the Cuban medical delegation in South Africa told Reyes'
relatives that he had betrayed the principles of the Revolution.
