HAVANA, May 10 (Manuel David Orrio, CPI) A shortage of women's
all-terrain bicycles in Havana's dollar stores has many women complaining that
they are being discriminated against, said one frustrated shopper who was unable
to find them.
A clerk at the Plaza de Carlos III, one of the biggest of Havana's newly
erected dollar
shopping malls, confirmed that bicycles in women's frames hadn't been
received in some time. Many other stores also had no women's models available.
The all-terrain models have gained in popularity as a basic means of
transportation as the city endures a growing crisis in transportation due to
fuel and equipment shortages. The bicycles are assembled in Cuba, have 18 speeds
and sell for between 110 and 250 dollars. Demand is high among those who have
the dollars to buy them, as they are perceived to be of higher quality than
other options.
