HAVANA, May 10 (Carmelo Díaz Fernández, APSIC) A blind
dissident was beat and arrested in Guantánamo after he was ordered to
leave a recreation center and he presumably didn't do it fast enough to suit the
policemen.
Leonardo Pérez Quiala, a member of the Consejo Unitario de
Trabajadores Cubanos, a dissident organization concerned with workers' rights,
was at the "Casa de la Música" recreation center April 5, when
two officers, with badge numbers 0334 and 0982, ordered him to leave.
Before Pérez could leave, the two officers beat him in a way that
bystanders called "a violation of legality" and put him in patrol car
158, which took him to the local police station where he was locked up in a
cell.
It was not clear whether Pérez's status as a dissident provoked the
officers behaviour.
