HAVANA, May 4 (Manuel David Orrio, CPI) The traditional festivities
commemorating International Workers' Day on May 1st showed the extent of the
Cuban government's media monopoly.
Every radio station broadcasting from Havana, except one, and every
television
station, joined a network to carry the same program, the May Day parade and
speeches.
Havana streets evidenced the people's displeasure with the measure which
some called excessive and inecessary to the information requirements of the
population.
An informal survey by CPI of about 40 households in four Havana
municipalities found people preferred to watch videotapes or recorded music;
only two homes out of the group chose to watch the official programming.
