PINAR DEL RIO, May 2 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) - The government
takes five percent of the dollar earnings of the fishing fleet based in the
small coastal town of La Coloma for the local polyclinic. Yet, the polyclinic is
falling apart and residents have to go away to receive decent medical care,
critics say.
Users most often complain that the buildings sewers are chronically
backed-up, and that water and electrical services are periodically interrupted.
In addition, users say medical equipment is badly deteriorated and the care
offered to pregnant women was suspended without explanation.
"Even with the money taken from the fishermen they cant make the
polyclinic run right. Patients have to travel dozens of miles to receive proper
care," said Eliosbel Garriga Cabrera, a member of the independent workers
organization Consejo Unitario de Trabajadores Cubanos.
