PINAR DEL RIO, April 30 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) - In spite of
chronic fuel shortages, 50 buses were driven more than 200 miles to transport
government supporters to the Bay of Pigs victory celebration April 18 and 19.
The buses were driven empty from Pinar del Río, Cubas
westernmost province, east to Havana, where they picked up passengers and took
them to the next province to the east, Matanzas. Reportedly, travelers on the
road between Pinar del Río and Havana asked, unsuccessfully, to be picked
up.
Back in Pinar del Río, the transportation crisis took a turn for the
worse on the days following the event. The cause, according to authorities, was
lack of fuel.
