SANTIAGO DE CUBA, March 28 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO) - The forced transfer
of a number of workers of the "Che Guevara" nickel factory in Moa,
Holguín province, affected their salaries.
An employee with more than 20 years' service at the plant said that the
decision is due to the new emphasis in so-called "entrepreneurial
improvement."
"Entrepreneurial improvement" represents a 180 degree turn with
respect to the labor policies in force at least theoretically up to
now. It used to be said that the human factor received priority, but now things
have changed because the State is only after profits and the human has been
relegated to a second or third priority," said the man.
Another aspect has added tension to the conflict. The workers who were not
transfered are required to work more hours at the factory to fulfill the
production plans.
"Officials make us work overtime, for which we don't get paid a penny,
saying the Revolution needs our sacrifice," said the man.
The measures are meant to reduce the labor force and make the factory pay.
Profitability has been and is one of the problems that the Cuban government has
never solved.
