HAVANA, March 19 (Rafael Pérez, AFPCP) - Cubans complaints
about the service rendered by the Cuban telephone company (ETECSA) have
increased in the last few days, centered on the difficulties in making
long-distance connections.
"Its impossible to talk with relatives living in the United
States. The calls are cut off or you cant establish communication with the
operator in the first place," said a 60-year-old woman in the La Víbora
district of Havana.
The woman explained that after the government allowed foreign investments in
the Cuban telephone company a few years ago the service had improved. "But
the problems are back," she complained.
A resident of El Cerro, another Havana district, said, "When you try to
place an international call, you generally get a recording that says all the
lines are congested. It can go on for hours until you reach an operator."
"The service ETECSA renders is beholden to the political decisions of
the Cuban government of restricting calls to the United States. Of course, the
largest number of calls are going to that country. Seems to me that is a clear
message to foreign investors that they can invest, but according to our
political ideology, not according to the market," said one man who asked
not to be identified.
