PINAR DEL RIO, March 16 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) - Thousands of
workers who live outside and work in the city of Pinar del Río face the
daunting task of getting to and from work every day in the midst of a worsening
transportation crisis.
"We waste the greater part of our free time trying to go to work and to
get back home," said one worker who lives outside the city and who didnt
want his name used.
The number of bus routes serving the city has been cut by more than 50
percent. Local officials only say that there is a shortage of equipment, parts,
tires and fuel.
They have authorized truck owners to transport passengers, but even they are
not sufficient to meet demand. In addition, the rickety trucks which havent
been prepared to transport passengers, driving down the provinces decrepit
roads imperil the passengers safety.
Another alternative, the train, is also subject to the same problems. The
trains are overloaded, slow and unpleasant. The fuel scarcity also affects them,
so they do not always run on schedule.
