ARTEMISA, February 27 (Rafael Peraza, APO) - Public Health authorities here
are umigating with diesel fuel to control the spread of mosquitoes and many
residents are concerned about possible ill-effects on their health.
Officials ordered diesel fuel used because there are no other chemical
controls available.
Workers with backpacks go from house to house, fumigating inside and out.
Residents are ordered out of their homes for the procedure and told not to go
back in for at least ten minutes thereafter.
Last week, former Comandante of the Revolution, Domingo René Collazo
and his wife were awakened by the diesel mist in their home. Workers had come in
through a window and were spraying inside the house. One of them said, "We
knocked and no one came to the door. We have orders to fumigate."
Collazo lost both legs and one hand more than 40 years ago, and his wife
suffers from asthma. From his wheelchair he berated the workers, "They dont
know what to do with me anymore because I oppose Communism. Now they are trying
to eliminate me as if I were a mosquito."
Residents find the proliferation of flies and mosquitoes alarming, but they
have been complaining even more about the fumigation.
