Laborers at sugar mill work seven days a week

HAVANA, February 27 (Ohalis Victore, Cuba Voz) - Officials of the Sugar Ministry in Matanzas province are breaking the law regarding the length of the work week under the current Labor Code.

Administrators at the "Cuba Libre" sugar mill in the town of Pedro Betancourt make laborers work seven days a week without a day of rest.

The Labor Code stipulates clearly that workers should work 44 hours a week.

The "Cuba Libre" mill processes the cane for two other mills in the vicinity that shut down operations and furloughed their workers at 60 percent salary.

One affected worker said, "Officials should stop mistreating workers in their zeal to fulfill the plan imposed by the Sugar Ministry. We have a right to rest like everybody else."
