HAVANA, July 24 (María Elena Rodríguez, Cuba-Voz) - The Cuban
government is recruiting Cuban youths between the ages of 18 and 35 to send them
to several countries in Latin America to teach basic reading and writing, said a
Communist Party member in Mariel.
The matter became known after a census was taken by teachers selected for
the task by their loyalty to the government.
The candidates who are selected will take a one year preparatory course if
they are secondary school graduates, or a two year course if they are 9th grade
graduates. They will receive a 100 peso stipend while they take the course.
The contents and objectives of the course are not known, but the expectation
is that it will include Spanish and Mathematics.
One youth in Mariel who participated in the census said: "This census
is strange. If it really is to identify people who may go to Latin America, it
will not be to teach ABCs, but to give political classes and to spread the
government's propaganda."
