HAVANA, July 17 (Juan Carlos Linares, Cuba Voz) - A Ministry of Education
directive to Havana schools ordered no celebrations be held at the end of the
school year just ended.
The official order gave no reason for the measure, but the popular consensus
is that it stems from instances in previous years of teachers misusing resources
collected from the students for the festivities.
"Last year there were teachers who profited from products [brought in
by the students] for the celebrations," said one teacher who did not want
to be identified.
The teacher explained that many teachers asked their students for either
money or in kind contributions for the festivities and kept most of what they
collected. A teacher in Arroyo Naranjo is said to have quit her job after
bilking more than 100 students.
