HAVANA, July 12 (Juan Carlos Linares, Cuba Voz) - There are fewer eggs
available for sale to consumers than usual in Havana this month, presumably as a
result of a government measure that diverted eggs to eastern Santiago de Cuba
province, where the availability of food is even more precarious than in the
capital.
The supply of eggs is regulated under the government's rationing plan to six
eggs per person every 15 days. More often, in practice, the quota is only
distributed once a month, and now even those few eggs are not showing up in
distribution centers.
Eggs are one of the few sources of animal protein for Cubans, since meats
and fish are very rarely available. The scarcity is also affecting bakeries, who
are reporting they cannot meet their production quotas.
