PINAR DEL RIO, July 11 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) The Cuban
Telephone Company (ETECSA), a joint Cuban-Italian venture, routinely bypasses
all those who are not government supporters when installing new service.
"You cannot get telephone service because you don't participate in
events called by the people's political organizations," a local official
told relatives of Pedro Rodríguez Hernández, a member of the
proscribed National Workers' Confederation. The official added: "In your
family, there are some who oppose the Revolution."
Rodríguez said that in Reparto Vélez, where he lives, everyone
who has requested telephone service has had it installed except himself. The
official who denied service, Alfredo Rodríguez, (no relation), is the one
who decides who will or will not get telephone service here.
Similarly, Lázaro Estanislao Ramos, also a member of the National
Workers' Confederation, complains that his request for service was denied. Ramos
also says that all his neighbors have service.
