HAVANA, July 11 (Juan Carlos Linares, Cuba Voz) - A hub of marginal housing
erected with left-over sheets of metal and cardboard near Havana's airport was
demolished and close to 100 squatters who lived there were carted off in buses
back to their home provinces.
Friday morning, more than 20 police rounded up the residents of "Hot
Panties," as the improvised community was called, and loaded them onto two
buses they had brought for the purpose. Subsequently, a grader leveled the
makeshift houses.
An eyewitness said that some of those evicted protested: "In the East
we are going to starve," a reference to the precarious situation in the
eastern provinces they had previously fled.
