HAVANA, July 9 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén) - In an unintentional parody of
a Keystone Kops comedy, two companies of firemen in Sagua la Grande, central
Cuba, watched five houses burn after they arrived at the fire without water in
their fire trucks.
The local firemen, first to arrive, were praised by residents for their
promptness, but once at the site of the fire, discovered their tanks were dry.
Authorities then summoned the fire company from nearby (approximately 30 miles)
Quemado de Güines, who arrived, unfolded their hoses, and found they had no
water either!
Residents formed a bucket brigade to prevent the spread of the fire to
adjacent houses until a third company, from the provincial capital of Santa
Clara, arrived with water in a tank truck normally used to transport milk. They
finally controlled the fire, which gutted three of the houses and damaged the
other two.
