Political police cancels showing of "Thirteen Days"

HAVANA, July 5 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI) - A showing of the film "Thirteen Days," planned for Friday, July 6, was cancelled by State Security agents, who told organizers Ariel Hernández Cerviño and Rafael Ernesto Ávila that if the planned event was not suspended they would be immediately arrested "or worse."

The showing, to have been followed by a debate among the audience, a common event here, was an initiative of two dissident groups, Nueva República and Partido Popular Joven Cuba.

The film, dealing with the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, has already been shown in Cuba. Its director, Kevin Costner, came to Cuba himself for a series of showings in which government officials, historians, critics and even Cuban president Fidel Castro saw it.

The public, however, has not had an opportunity to see the film because it has not been shown in theaters. Government officials say the film has not been shown because it is being "analyzed." Only a few, presumably bootleg, copies of the film are available in clandestine video rental operations around Havana.
