Pretoria - The Cubans coming to South Africa next year to train mathematics
and science teachers would only be paid R800 a month, Education Minister Kader
Asmal confirmed on Friday.
He said the Cuban ambassador in South Africa had, as an act of solidarity,
offered the services of the teacher trainers on the basis that accommodation,
food, transport and medical insurance be provided for them.
The ambassador had said they would not need more than R800 per month as they
only required pocket money, Asmal told reporters in Centurion.
"We are certainly not going to oppose what the Cuban government wants."
SA Democratic Teachers' Union deputy president Edwin Pillay said the union
appreciated the gesture of the Cuban ambassador, but would try and recruit the
trainers and represent them to ensure they received fair treatment.
Asmal earlier said the 40 to 50 Cubans would be proficient in English and
would mainly be deployed to rural areas and townships.
