VILLA CLARA, June 28 (Edel José García, CNP) - The
self-employed driver of a horse-drawn carriage appealing the suspension of his
occupational license was told by the municipal transportation chief to put a
propeller on his carriage and try to reach the United States with it if he
wasn't happy with the suspension.
Government authorities accused William Rodríguez Rojas of illegally
transporting cheese on June 17 and suspended his license. Rodríguez says
that operating the carriage was his sole means of supporting his family.
It was when he appealed the suspension that Eduardo Cabello Peña, the
municipal transportation chief for the central Cuban city of Caibarién,
suggested that he stick a propeller on his carriage.
Rodríguez said that municipal officials later allowed that the cheese
had been acquired legally, but that they still wouldn't reinstate his license
because he is a member of the Rafters' Association Peace, Democracy and Liberty
and consequently considered a counterrevolutionary. He calls the suspension "...
an instance of political repression against me."
