Sex scandal in secondary school in Santiago de Cuba

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, January 29 (Luis Alberto Rivera, APLO) – Eleven teachers in the "Antonio Maceo" vocational secondary school here have been implicated in a sex scandal involving prostitution, pornography and corruption of minors.

One of the eleven, physical education teacher Jorge Clavijo, is under arrest and the rest are free on bond awaiting trial, accused of having sex with female students. They have all been fired from the school.

Clavijo is said to have established a sexual services agency for foreigners in which an unspecified number of students were presumably involved. According to this scheme, Clavijo would establish contact with the foreigners, set the price in dollars, take the students out of the school in his car and deliver them to their dates, collect the money, and return the students to the school, giving them a cut of the earnings.

The "Antonio Maceo" school has been implicated in previous, although less serious, scandals. It is a live-in school holding close to 2,000 students between 14 and 17 years of age. It is considered a very selective school to which incoming students must present outstanding academic records and pass an entrance exam.

In the absence of official reports, several versions of the story have been swirling around the city. One has arrested teacher Clavijo sending photographs of the students to Jamaica, in order to promote them in the international sex market. According to this story, the photographs came to the attention of Cuban officials abroad who notified authorities here. Another version is that an investigation was started when a student complained that his girlfriend was continually harassed by one of the teachers eventually implicated in the scandal. The official press has not reported the incident.
