Independent journalist freed after threats

HAVANA, January 28 (María Elena Rodríguez) - Independent journalist Silvio Herrera Núñez, 49, was freed after more than seven hours of questioning by agents of the Department of State Security.

Herrera was arrested early Friday morning at his home in the old Havana district and taken to a police station in Marianao, at the other end of the city. After two hours, he was taken to a house in the outskirts of the city where he was questioned about his activities as an independent journalist.

"They stressed that I don’t have a degree in journalism [and therefore not elegible to practice journalism in Cuba] and said that I am violating Law 88 [a recent law that provides penalties of up to 20 years for anyone reporting news to foreign media], said Herrera. "They also said that they would not let me leave the country," Herrera added.
