PINAR DEL RIO, January 16 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) - Adduel
Borrego Mangañelles, 24, a second year Computer Science student at the
University of Havana, cannot find employment nor continue his studies because he
is a political dissident.
"As long as you are a dissident you are not going to be allowed to
touch that kind of equipment here," captain Ríos, the chief of
police of the township of Manuel Lazo, told Borrego.
Borrego is a member of the Pro-Human Rights Party of Cuba, affiliated with
the Andrey Sakharov Foundation. In addition to being discriminated against in
job and educational opportunities, Borrego is habitually harassed by police.
As recently as December 23, Borrego was arrested by State Security agents,
who reiterated their previous threats to jail him if he persisted in his
activities with the party. Were he to quit, they promised him a cushy job.
"If you dont accept, in the best of cases you are only going to
be able to work in agriculture; unless we put you in jail," one of the
agents said to him.
