Lower house speaker Watanuki to meet Castro on Thursday

Kyodo News. January 12, 2001.

TOKYO Jan. 12 Kyodo - House of Representatives Speaker Tamisuke Watanuki, who leaves Sunday on a 10-day official visit to Mexico and Cuba, will meet Cuban President Fidel Castro next Thursday, sources close to Watanuki said Friday.

According to the sources, after holding talks with Mexican President Vicente Fox on Monday, Watanuki will arrive in Cuba on Tuesday, becoming the first Japanese lower house speaker to visit the Caribbean island nation, according to the sources.

The last time a top Japanese government official visited Cuba was in March 1997 when then State Foreign Secretary Masahiko Komura -- the current Justice Minister -- visited Havana to seek Cuba's help in ending the prolonged hostage crisis at the residence of the Japanese ambassador to Peru.
