TOKYO Jan. 12 Kyodo - House of Representatives Speaker Tamisuke Watanuki,
who leaves Sunday on a 10-day official visit to Mexico and Cuba, will meet Cuban
President Fidel Castro next Thursday, sources close to Watanuki said Friday.
According to the sources, after holding talks with Mexican President Vicente
Fox on Monday, Watanuki will arrive in Cuba on Tuesday, becoming the first
Japanese lower house speaker to visit the Caribbean island nation, according to
the sources.
The last time a top Japanese government official visited Cuba was in March
1997 when then State Foreign Secretary Masahiko Komura -- the current Justice
Minister -- visited Havana to seek Cuba's help in ending the prolonged hostage
crisis at the residence of the Japanese ambassador to Peru.
