CIEGO DE AVILA, January 8 (Juan Carlos González Leyva, FCDH) - The
Popular Tribunal in Ciego de Ávila, in central Cuba, found a shooting
victim guilty of his own death.
Juan Alberto López del Valle, 25, a night watchman at ITHSA
Enterprises here, was shot by his fellow worker Luis Armenteros Camaño
November 11, 1999. According to testimony by Lópezs relatives, he
went into the high grass surrounding his workplace with his lover at a little
past 10:50 p.m. on the night he died. Previously he had given his service
revolver to Armenteros, who a few minutes later shot him.
Lópezs relatives complain that police not only did not allow
the matter to be cleared up but prevented the only two witnesses at the scene,
Deysi Rodríguez Bautista and Ortelio Lázaro Guevara, from
testifying at the trial. The court absolved Armenteros of any responsibility and
blamed López in his own death.
