HAVANA, (CWNews.com) - Osvaldo Paya Sardinas, founder and leader of the
dissident Catholic group Movimiento Cristiano Liberacion (Christian Liberation
Movement) issued a statement calling on Cubans to "build moral foundations
to achieve true change in Cuba."
Paya Sardinas, who has been arrested and incarcerated several times since he
launched a campaign to collect signatures to call for open, democratic elections
in Communist Cuba, said in his statement that "a moral renewal in Cuba will
create the change of social conscience needed to unleash a wide, unstoppable
civic movement toward democracy."
Risking another arrest, Paya harshly criticized Cuba's economic situation,
and said that "despite the government's claims, Cuba is not the holiday
post card you see in tourist advertisements."
"Despite the current crisis, Cubans have the energy to awake, with the
help of God, from this political, social, and moral nightmare," he added.
