Children’s park neglected into oblivion

HAVANA, February 23 (Jorge Cordero, AFPCP) - The children’s park at Clavel and San Pedro Streets, in the Havana municipality of El Cerro, has been neglected to the brink of uselessness.

"This has become a dangerous area for those that walk by at night," said one resident who refused to give her name when she learned the news would be published by the independent press.

The lights haven’t worked for a long time, say residents. There are only shreds left of the fence encircling the park, the grounds are only dirt and potholes, and the playground equipment is broken and rusted out, they say.

"We have tried to get the government to repair the park, but to no avail," said one mother who will not allow her children to play in the park.

"Neither the local government nor Municipal Services will do anything to rebuild the place, while the children look sadly at a place that used to be ideal for them to play," said another resident.
