Increased police presence felt in Havana

HAVANA, February 22 (Jorge Cordero, AFPCP) - An increased police presence in most areas of Havana has become evident in the last few days, but, other than popular speculation, no explanations have surfaced for the display.

"In almost every major intersection you can see police in twos," said one resident who would not identify himself. The officers search any bags that people carry and ask to see their identification papers.

Self-employed taxi drivers also seem to be targets. "They are stopped without

justification, they are asked to show the car’s papers, and the cars themselves are inspected for technical problems," said a man who would not give his name.
