HAVANA, February 21 (Carmelo Díaz Fernández, APSIC) - A
wax-extraction plant put in operation in 1991 and shut down in 1997 has now been
permanently closed.
The plant, adjoining the Brasil (formerly Jaronú) sugar mill in
Esmeralda, Camagüey province, was active for barely seven years. It is not
known why it ceased operating.
When the plant was shut down, some workers were retained to care for the
installation and maintain the equipment. Now the decision to permanently close
the facility has idled even those workers, who were offered employment in
agriculture. None of the 20 accepted. "We are not farmers. The measure
affects us salary-wise, but we would have to travel long distances to that type
of employment," said one of the workers, who asked that his name not be
used.
