At least 53 out of 95 Cuban doctors in the Eastern Cape are currently serving in the rural areas of the province, said Health MEC Bevan Goqwana at the legislature yesterday (subs:tues).

Responding to questions asked by UDM Chief Whip Billy Nel, Goqwana Goqwana said the 95 doctors' salaries cost the provincial department more than R1,8m a month.

He explained that the 89 doctors in the principal medical practitioner category were paid R 6 425 a month.

The three senior practitioners received a salary of R5 583 and the three doctors in the category of medical practitioners received R4 500.

The doctors' salary scale was equivalent to the local doctors' scale. The Cuban doctors serving in rural areas were receiving an added R1 600 monthly allowance for serving in these areas.
