Agriculture ministry officials evict peasants from small farms

PINAR DEL RIO, February 19 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, Lux InfoPress) - Agriculture Ministry officials are evicting peasants from small holdings they have worked for years and, in the process, destroying crops that are ready for harvest.

One official involved said that "they recognize the measure will not alleviate the scarcity of food in the territory, but they have no option but to carry the measure out."

Prescinda Hernández Méndez, a member of a dissident organization, says there is plenty of land lying fallow, and that the small parcels being taken from the farmers had also been abandoned for years before the farmers started planting them to mitigate the scarcity of food in the province.
