SANTIAGO DE CUBA, February 18 (Luis Alberto Rivera, APLO) - More than a
million dollars earmarked to improve conditions in the Boniato prison here have
been diverted by administrators for their own ends, says a communique smuggled
out of the prison by the "Pedro Luis Boitel" political prisoner
organization.
Authorities have used the money to build comfortable facilities for
administrators and staff at the prison, including air-conditioned quarters and a
new kitchen, and new walkie-talkies for the guards, the organization charges. In
contrast to the guards’ new foam-rubber mattresses, the prisoners must
sleep in mattresses filled with grass that tend to become infested by biting
insects, and eat the meager rations prepared in the old kitchen under marginal
sanitary conditions.
To date, the only benefit to have trickled down to the prisoners is a color
TV set, the report concludes.
