HAVANA, February 15 (Carmelo Díaz Fernández, APSIC)
Cuban consumers complain they receive Soviet-style service even in the
hard-currency stores where they must make their purchases with U. S. dollars.
Most shoppers commented that cashiers have to be watched carefully, lest
they shortchange them.
"They always make mistakes in their favor," said one shopper who
didnt want her name used.
Shoppers also complain bitterly about the quality of the merchandise; small
appliances head the list. Clothing, according to consumers, is of very poor
quality. "The shoes come unglued after a week," said one. Others said
clothing is often stained, but sells at the same price as if it werent.
Many said that bags are often not available to wrap purchases.
