HAVANA, February 15 (Carmelo Díaz Fernández, APSIC)
Students at the "Álvaro Morales Hernández" primary
school attend classes in a crumbling building in which the walls are soft and
the roof has gaping holes.
In the rainy season, parents have had to carry their children on their
shoulders to clear the standing water on the floors. Privately, the parents
admit they are worried about the safety of the building.
The schools principal, Juan Carlos Suárez, has tried repeatedly
to have the building repaired or refurbished, but the Popular Power (local
government) says that no building materials have been assigned to the task.
Parents, meantime, point out that in spite of official pronouncements that
children are a priority of the government, they live in fear that their children
could be hurt by a building collapse.
