Consumers are asked to police price controls

HAVANA, February 9 (José Antonio Fornaris, Cuba-Verdad) – The signs read: "ATTENTION. If you observe any violation of the established rules, and you are offered any bread that is not the quota item at five cents, call the following phone numbers immediately…(several numbers are given) War On Crime!" It can be found posted in government-operated bakeries that are supposed to supply the population with one small bun daily under the rationing system.

The same signs are not found at the outlets of the (also government-operated) Cuban Bread Chain. There a loaf weighing a little over a pound sells for 10 pesos without any restrictions. The salary of the average Cuban worker is around 220 pesos a month.
