Culture ministry shuts down artists' studios

HAVANA, February 9 (José Antonio Fornaris, Cuba-Verdad) – The Ministry of Culture ordered all artists' studios, workshops and private galleries shut down within 72 hours of the date of the order, February 1. The Ministry's order specifically declared such places illegal and forbid the sale of their products.

Many Cuban artists have lately taken to selling their paintings and sculptures either on the street, from their studios, or through private (non-governmental) galleries. All such activities are now declared illegal. Most artists expressed surprise at the measure, since, they said, they pay the tax established by the authorities. Their options at this point seem to be either to sell clandestinely or to consider themselves unemployed.
