HAVANA, (CWNews.com) - A Cuban Catholic dissident organization, the "Asociacion
Humanitaria Seguidores de Cristo Rey" (Humanitarian Association of
Followers of Christ the King) announced early this week the inauguration of an
independent Christian library.
The new Jerusalem Library will operate out of the home of the association's
founder, Isabel del Pino in Havana. According to del Pino, the library will
provide access to the various Catholic magazines and newsletters published in
the Communist country, including the two cultural magazines Vitral and Espacios,
as well as the bulletins Palabra Nueva and Aqui la Iglesia, which cover Catholic
activities in several different dioceses.
"The library will also include encyclopedias and academic books of
Christian history, as a way to promote the badly needed religious information
among the population," said del Pino. "Not only religion, but even
religious knowledge have been prohibited by the atheist government system,"
she added.
Since 1998, independent libraries have been booming in several Cuban cities,
taking advantage of a loophole in Cuban legislation. Most frequently, "independent
libraries" are no more than a collection of used books and foreign
magazines either prohibited or non-existent in public libraries. Since they
operate in homes, it is hard for the political police to find grounds to close
them down without irritating the people.
