HAVANA, February 1 (Aleida Godines Soler, Lux InfoPress) A contingent
of police under the leadership of a lieutenant colonel known to locals only as "César"
broke a window to get into the house occupied by Rosa García Matos, 24,
and her two small children and take their belongings out in an attempt to evict
them on January 18.
After suffering the polices insults, García waited for them to
leave and locked herself and the children in the house. The agents returned at
2:30 in the afternoon, broke the door, and took the three out of the house. In
the scuffle, García apparently fainted and had to be taken to the
provincial hospital.
As the family was evicted, residents gathered, shouting "Murderers"
at the police. Reportedly one woman by the name of Mirtha, a friend of García,
was struck in the face by a major Palomino, and another, Rocío Peña,
who works with García, was also struck by a policeman.
For the rest of the afternoon, police kept a visible watch over the
neighborhood, presumably to forestall any reaction on the part of residents.
