Cape Town, South Africa - South African President Thabo Mbeki is to visit
Cuba later this year to underscore Pretoria's gratitude to President Fidel
Castro's government for support during the anti-apartheid struggle.
Foreign Affairs spokesman Dumisane Rasheleng said this would be a follow-up
to Foreign Minister Nkosasana Dlamini-Zuma's official visit to Cuba this week.
Details of Mbeki's trip would be announced later.
Dlamini-Zuma met her counterpart Felipe Perez Rogue in Havana Thursday for
talks on multilateral issues including co- operation at international fora such
as the Non-Aligned Movement and the G77 group of developing countries.
Cuba played a key role in the eventual defeat of apartheid in South Africa
by providing substantial material assistance in the military, human resource
development, reconstruction and medical fields.
Both countries have strong political and economic relations and
opportunities for extended co-operation exist in the field of mining and
agriculture, which have shown significant growth over the past few years.
