Reds scouting director Kasey McKeon said Wednesday the organization
will consider evaluating a pair of Cuban defectors who secured U.S. residency
and have petitioned to become free agents.
The defectors, 22-year-old right-hander Mayque Quintero and
23-year-old infielder Evel Bastida, are expected to show their skills in a
workout in Florida later this month, according to a news release issued by their
agent, Joe Kehoskie.
"There have been others out there who we've had no interest in,"
McKeon said. "But these guys have interesting backgrounds."
Quintero and Bastida each played four seasons with the Industriales,
Cuba's top team. Quintero, who had a 10-5 record with a 1.90 ERA last year, is
said to possess a fastball in the low 90 mph range. Bastida has been evaluated
as a prototypical leadoff hitter. |
