HAVANA, December 12 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén / www.cubanet.org) - For
years now, Cubans have told the story of the exploding croquette, a presumably
edible confection sold by government-run suppliers that explodes when
deep-fried.
After an apparent absence of a few months, the exploding croquettes have
reappeared in three Cuban municipalities in two provinces.
Ángela Rojas, of Campo Florido, Havana province, escaped unscathed
when the croquettes she was frying exploded. Neighbors say the noise was such
that they ran to help, thinking there had been an accident in the kitchen.
Rosario Fernández was not so lucky. She bought the croquettes in the
same establishment where Rojas bought hers, and she suffered third degree burns
in the face and arms. She was hospitalized.
In Camagüey province, some months back, several housewives ended up at
the provincial hospital with burns caused by frying oil as a consequence of
exploding croquettes.
"The croquettes explode with such force that they cause the lid of the
pan fly off," said Alberto Hernández, a resident of Camagüey.
To date, no one has been able to offer a plausible explanation for why the
croquettes explode.
