(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, November 29, 2001) – Prisoners serving
sentences in Combinado de Guantánamo, denounce before the national and
international community the situation regarding the medical post in this prison
and declared the following:
In many occasions, penal military authorities would decide to take a
prisoner in pain or sick to the infirmary where the prisoner is hit with the
hard reality that in fact, there is no medical personnel there to help him. The
people in charge of the penal medical post are Dr. Aracelia and nurse Marlene,
but they are never there.
This behavior violates the established requirements of the Department of
Health, which states that, in any medical position there should always be
present a health official.
The penitentiary system in Cuba is unique to the world. The whole island is
a prison with an area of 110,882 Km. and 3,735 Km. of coastline, Cuba has a
penal population of 11,217,000 prisoners; in addition, inside this big prison,
there are many penitentiaries, and those who wait behind those bars are
submitted to extremely cruel and degrading treatment. Combinado de Guantánamo
is one of those penitentiaries.
