HAVANA (Juan Carlos Linares, Cuba Voz) Television sets with 19- and
21-inch screens are being withdrawn from dollar stores in Havana and sent to
schools which lack receivers.
An executive of CIMEX, the state chain of stores, who asked not to be
indentified, said this meassure responds to a government's iniciative to push
political propaganda trasmited daily on TV (the so called "battle of ideas")
to students who were not having access to the media.
The executive affirmed that the government hoped to resume dollar sales in
November with a new make of TV.
The current 19- and 21-inch sets are Pandas, a Chinese make assembled in
Cuba. However, Panda has had problems supplying parts.
The assembler of two other makes, Sanyo and Phillps, closed after the
co-owner, said to be a Brazilian, withdrew his financing.
Currently no TV sets are sold in stores for pesos. They're only available in
dollar stores.
