HAVANA, September 25 (Carmelo Díaz, APSIC) - Dairy herd #3 of the "Roberto
Estévez Ruz" company is seriously affected by the drought in Cauto
Cristo, a region of the eastern Cuban province of Granma.
The 13,275 acres of feed grasses allocated to the herd are in poor shape.
The "Jimmy Hirzel" cattle company is in a similar situation, having
reached its lowest point since it was founded in 1994. In both cases, there
isn't enough water being pumped from the Cauto river to irrigate the land, in
addition to other material limitations that directly affect the animals' feed.
Sarbelio Díaz Naranjo, general secretary of the Communist Party in
the area, says that "the non-supply of tires, fuel, clothing and working
shoes, as well as other necessary consumables, is affecting the
economic-productive situation of the Basic Units for Cooperative Production in
Cauto Cristo."
At present, there are considerable obstacles to meeting the goals of the
Dairy Plan, which is estimated to be 280,000 liters behind, mostly due to the
insufficient feed the herd is receiving.
