HAVANA, September 21 (María de los Angeles González, UPECI)
A number of foreign tourists were driven out of the "Atlántico"
hotel in Santa María beach, east of Havana, Saturday by a plague of
mosquitoes and other biting insects.
A worker at the hotel store said that for months now the authorities have
not sprayed the area for insects. "Very near here is Mi Cayito, a swampy
region" and mosquito breeding ground.
Cuban workers who have been awarded vacations at the Workers' Union
facilities, also in Santa María, complain they cannot step outside the
buildings because the mosquitoes are so thick.
The Cuban vacationers also complain that food and other items in the beaches
east of Havana are only sold in dollars. Residents say this is due to the
government's interest in keeping ordinary Cubans away from tourist centers and
from contact with foreigners.
