Transportation Of Spoiled Food Requires Police Escort

HAVANA, September 20 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI) – The trucks transporting food refuse to the Animal Feed Plant in Alquízar municipality, in the outskirts of Havana, are routinely escorted by armed guards who, on occasion, have to fire a few shots to intimidate pilferers.

"People need food and these trucks go by loaded with frozen chickens, cold cuts, ice-cream, soft drinks and hot dogs," explains a local resident.

The foodstuffs appear to be in good shape, but they are going to the feed factory. "Often the workers at the plant take the food and resell them to the people. Other times the residents manage to take something from the moving trucks," said the man.

"It is sad to see how the food, which seems to be in good condition, is turned into feed for pigs that we’ll never eat," he concluded.
