PINAR DEL RIO, September 19 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) A
crop duster pilot made a quick landing at a remote airfield to pick up his
family, after having tricked his copilot off the plane at a previous stop, and
headed north toward the United States.
The pilot, known locally as Eddy, picked up his wife and two children and
other relatives at the landing strip called "El Caribe" in Consolación
del Sur.
The plane, a vintage Soviet-built Antonov AN-2, was used as a crop duster in
the rice growing regions of Pinar del Río province. It can carry 10-12
passengers.
There was a report that the pilot, a Communist Party militant, had recently
disagreed with authorities at the aviation base where he was assigned over the
firing of a number of pilots.
At the Borrego airfield in the city of Pinar del Río where the planes
are based, there was evidence yesterday of a number of high officials of the
Revolutionary Armed Forces and of the political police. All the planes were on
the ground and all flights, passenger and agricultural, were suspended.
