PINAR DEL RIO, September 19 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI) A
number of workers in the fishing community of La Coloma in the province of Pinar
del Río have been fired from their jobs after being classified as "untrustworthy"
by officials seeking to prevent massive escapes from the country aboard fishing
boats.
Political police captain Romelio Martínez has been carrying out a
detailed investigation of all who work aboard the fishing boats. More than ten
workers have been fired so far as a result of his investigation, including
masters, machinists, deckhands and cooks.
Similar measures have been taken at other fishing ports in this province
although the political tenor of the measures are disguised behind phrases on the
unemployment papers such as "for illicit gambling" or "for
drinking alcoholic beverages."
The mass firings started after a number of workers stole a fishing boat in
August and sailed to the United States.
